Guttering

Why Do Gutters Overflow?

Overflowing gutters can send water down a wall or across an entrance. The visible spill is useful to note, but several different issues can cause it.

Guttering and roofline details on a house

Possible causes

Leaves and debris can obstruct a gutter or downpipe. A section may also have shifted, developed a poor fall, or separated at a joint. In heavy rain, water running over a particular edge may point to a blockage or a connection that needs attention.

The roof edge matters too. Water can miss the gutter if the surrounding roofline details are damaged or misaligned.

What to record safely

Note where water overflows, whether it happens in every shower or only during heavy rain, and whether you can see staining on the wall below. A short video taken from the ground during rain can be useful.

Avoid ladders or reaching into high gutters yourself if access is unsafe.

Getting the right work quoted

Tell the roofer which elevation is affected and whether the downpipe is also overflowing. An inspection can establish whether cleaning, a local gutter repair, adjustment or wider fascia and soffit work is needed.
